Volunteer FAQ

When can I volunteer at The Food Bank?
You can schedule a Volunteer Session during the following times—

Mon.–Thurs. Morning Session:  9 am–12 pm
Mon.–Thurs. Afternoon Session:  12–3 pm

Tues. & Thurs. Evenings:  6–9 pm
Sat. Session:  9 am–1 pm

Are reservations required?
Yes, all volunteer sessions must be scheduled in advance. Please contact Jennifer Sickinger at (417) 865-3411 to arrange a time to volunteer.

Is there a minimum time commitment when volunteering?
Volunteers are required to stay the full 3 hour session. Volunteers are welcome to schedule sessions as their time allows or commit to a weekly schedule. Regularly scheduled volunteers are a critical part of food distribution.

Do you have age requirements for volunteers?
Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Volunteers ages 14 and 15 must be accompanied by an adult. All volunteers under 18 years old must have a consent form signed by a parent or guardian.

What should I wear?
Volunteers are REQUIRED TO WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES. You should wear comfortable, casual clothing that you can work in. The work can be dirty, so please dress appropriately.

Can I use my volunteer time for a community service project and will I be able to get verification of time given?
Yes, The Food Bank welcomes community service hours. If you require verification of time, a Volunteer Time Card will be provided at the beginning of your session. Letters can also be provided, but please allow 24 to 48 hours for your request to be processed.

What are The Food Bank’s greatest needs for volunteers?
Volunteers are needed during the weekdays to Sort & Repack donations. Regularly scheduled volunteers who can learn sorting procedures and help train new volunteers are critical to distribution. Volunteer groups also make a big impact on Ozarks Food Harvest’s hunger relief services and can process thousands of pounds of donations in a short amount of time. It is also great for team building!

What should I know before scheduling a group event?
Groups must have a minimum of 5 volunteers and a maximum of 15. All volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Members of the group are required to arrive on time for food safety training and stay for the full session. It is helpful to have 2 event dates in mind when calling to schedule.

Can volunteers bring food to eat?
Yes, the Volunteer Center consists of a Volunteer Break Room with a refrigerator, microwave, and sink for your use.

I’m limited physically, is there anything I can do?
Most of the heavy lifting is done by Food Bank staff. If you are able to stand for 3 hours, then we can use your help!  There are jobs for most every age and ability. Occasionally, Ozarks Food Harvest needs help with office projects such as folding cards or stuffing envelopes. Please notify staff if that is what you are interested in.
